Various calls for women’s freedom, liberation and equal rights have been
 heard all over the world, and many slogans have been coined for the
marches. In some societies women have indeed lived under oppression,
cruelty and injustice, and have been denied basic rights of humanity.
Nor is it denied that some Muslims have deviated from the Islamic
principles and teachings. Islamic law, on the other hand, has
quarantined women’s rights in a comprehensive and balanced system of
human rights and obligations. Close examination of the slogans
propagated by the international women’s liberation movements show that
they revolve around the three elements: women’s liberation; equal rights
 with men; women’s rights. We will examine them in the light of Islamic
law and teachings, regardless of the practices of some of the ignorant
and deviant Muslims.</h4>

<h4 style="text-align: center;">

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The general understanding in Islam regarding Sunnah, is that if the
Prophet or any of his wives (RA) or companions (RA) are recorded in
authentic hadith to have engaged in an act that is not haram
(prohibited) as defined by Qur’an or Sunnah, then the act is declared
halal (permissible). If the companions engaged in an act that the
Prophet was aware of and did not speak out against, it is halal.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
It is well-known that the wives of the
Prophet covered their faces any time non-mahram men were near. A woman
named Asma, who was not a wife of the Prophet , was also recorded as
covering her face. Easily, one can conclude that wearing veil is halal
(permissible).</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
However, Muslims and Muslimahs across the
 world have been in “hot debate” for centuries, over the issue of
whether or not covering the face is obligatory upon a Muslimah. Those
who argue that it is not required, point to the use of the word khimar
in the Qur’an, and explain that today’s modern khimar does not cover the
 face, and argue that khimar has never referred to the covering of the
face, but only to that of the hair, neck, and bosoms. While one cannot
deny the support of Hadith that indicate that the Prophet’s wives wore
khimar, one must realize that they also covered their faces at all times
 in the presence of non-mahram men.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The group of scholars agree that it is a
highly recommended act to cover the face. The scholars also agree that a
 woman must cover her adornment, yet some scholars argue that this does
not include the face.<span id="more-7954"></span></h4>

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Extraordinary consideration has been
given by the Islamic Law to women’s affairs. Such consideration is
sufficient to protect her chastity, to honor her and to secure her
position in life. The “restrictions” placed upon her regarding her dress
 and the display of her beauty and ornament is only to guard against all
 ways of corruption arising from such dazzling displays. What Islam has
established is not a restriction on the freedom of women but is a firm
protection for her from falling down to the lowest levels of humility.</h4>

This is the second edition of this book.
It comes at a time when more women are throwing away their revealing
clothes, and wearing the Hijab. It goes to print when Muslim women are
being raped and tom in their Hijabs in “civilized” Europe(2)! and when
France(3) prevents Muslim women from wearing the Hijab at school. These
are times of trials for Muslims and particularly for Muslim women. We
all have to remember the path of the Prophets: endurance, patience,
holding on, and aiming high by keeping the way of Allah above

1-Hijab in Islam</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Many Westerners think that hijab (veil)
is the symbol of oppression of the Muslim woman. Several western
caricaturists depict the Muslim woman typically as one wearing a black
«aba›a» : a dress that covers all her body except for her eyes. She is
usually fat and sad! The aim behind this is usually to criticize such
costume and confirm the image of the oppressed Muslim woman in the
western minds! We refuted that image in a previous article «Arabs and
Women Slavery» in which we mentioned the reaction of Saudi female

the American Administration, and how they proved their love of their
Islamic costume and hijab. They were proud and had no intention to give
this up. However, is hijab an Islamic innovation?</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
2-Hijab was an Old Jewish Custom</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Although Muslim women are the ones that
mostly observe the hijab, it is not correct that Islam is the only
religion that orders its followers to wear hijab! Laila Lia Bruner,
professor of Jewish history at the Jewish University and the visiting
professor at Shiva University Institute for Adult Studies indicates
that, «the early divine classic literature, Talmud and Midrash, had
completely different viewpoints regarding covering woman’s hair. At that
 time, covering hair was not just a costume or a habit as in the Bible.
Rather, it was the rule and regulation for pious women. The later divine
 literature of the middle ages asserted that issue as a complementary
part of Jewish religious rituals.» (1) Hijab, then, was a habit and then
 a religious obligation on the Jewish woman. The Talmud Encyclopedia
asserts this through comparing the opinion of the «mishna», the main
source of rabbinic Judaism, and that of the Talmud regarding hijab:</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
«It seems that the mishna considered
covering the hair as a Jewish habit despite that Talmud had already set a
 Torah rule for that and stated it as an obligation. Moreover, it is
interesting that the term ‹dat yahudit› is used only for the behavior of
 women so that many defined the term as related to women›s modesty in
particular.» (2)</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Whether covering hair was a Jewish habit
or a religious obligation, it is an established fact that was known and
widespread in old Jewish societies.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
In his book The Jewish Woman in Rabbinic
Literature, Rabbi Dr. Menachem M. Brayer, Professor of Biblical
Literature at Yeshiva University, indicates that it was the habit of
Jewish women to go in public with the head cover which covered at time
the whole face except for one eye. (3) He quotes the words of some old
famous Rabbis as saying, «it is not the habit of the girls of Israel to
go with bare head», «damned be the man who let his wife›s hair to be
seen … The woman who keeps her hair bare brings poverty.» The divine law
 prohibits the recitation of blessings or prayers in the presence of a
married woman whose hair is not covered. This is considered as
«nakedness»(4). Professor Brier adds that, «during the period of Tanitic
 the failure of woman to cover her hair was considered as a humiliation
of her modesty. She was fined four hundred «zeuzem» for that (zeuzem was
 about a quarter of a shekel)». He indicates as well that the hijab of
the Jewish woman was not always a sign of modesty; at times it was an
indication of distinction and luxury for noble women. It also symbolized
 the non-attainment of the married woman as being a sacred ownership of
her husband. (5) Hijab also symbolized self-respect of the woman and he
social status. Women of the lower classes used to wear hijab to give the
 impression that they were of a higher class. Hijab, in fact, was an
indication of the noble class and this was the reason prostitutes were
prevented from covering their hair in old Jewish society. However,
prostitutes often wore a special scarf to look respectable. (6)<span id="more-16638"></span></h4>

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
During the last fifteen years since I
came to accept Islam, I have been asked many questions about the Muslim
way of life by non-Muslim friends and acquaintances. The ignorance of
the ordinary educated Westerner about Islam is almost total; but the
area where the vacuum of knowledge has been most effectively filled with
 misinformation is possibly concerning the role of women in Islam. Some
non-Muslims ask such questions as “In Islam do you believe that women
have souls?” and “Muslim women do not pray or go to Makka, do they?” and
 “Paradise is only for men in Islam, isn’t it?”</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
<em>Fantasy and Escape</em></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
According to these assumptions, the
Muslim woman is spiritually a non-person, existing in a world of
shadows, oppressed and suppressed, from which she will at death pass
into a sort of limbo for soulless non-entities. This impression has in
the past often been fostered by Christian missionaries, some of whom may
 even have actually believed it to be true. Side by side with this image
 In the Western mind is another one projected by the entertainment
media, that of the Muslim woman as a member. of the harem in the
Hollywood versions of the Arabian Nights. Here she forms a unit in a
flock of scantily-clad and birdwitted young ladies who lie around in
palaces awaiting the opportunity to be noticed by their lord and master,
 the sultan.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
These images are of course very appealing
 to the Western imagination-firstly of the mysterious and chaste veiled
woman, living in fear of her jealous and brutal husband; she is the
traditional maiden in distress, waiting for St. George to slay the
dragon and rescue her; and secondly of the slave-girl, dazzling in silks
 and jewels, awaiting her master’s pleasure. Which Western man or woman
has not at one time or another indulged in a fantasy in which he or she
plays one of these roles? This is doubtless why the fantasy lingers so
long. We want to believe that these women exist so that we can weave
these day-dreams about them, though publicly we must condemn a situation
 so obviously contrary to the principles of women’s liberation.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
This then is the fantasy, and as long as
we recognise it as such, it is a pleasant form of escapism. But we are
here to discuss women in Islam and to outline what is the role expected
of a Muslim woman. Th& best source of information on this must be
not tales of imagination and Hollywood’s choicest offerings but the
source-book of Islam-that is the Qur’an, and the hadTth, the recorded
sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
My intention is to bring to your notice
some of those verses of the Qur’an and sayings of t~e Prophet Mu~ammad
which relate to women, and to try to draw some conclusions about what
these mean-or should mean-in practice, with regard to a woman’s life. I
do not intend to describe the status of Muslim women In individual
countries past or present, however, since this varies considerably from
one period to another and one place to another due to the influence of
regional customs stemming from pre-Islamic or modern cultural factors…</h4>

<strong>Foreword:</strong></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The West has known Islam for over
thirteen centuries now, but it has generally known it in antagonistic
terms as an enemy and as a threat. It is not surpri’sing therefore that
our religion has been portrayed as a hostile, tyrannical, violent and
even idolatrous religion and our culture has been painted in dark and
dismal colours. This state of affairs cannot be allowed to persist and
disfigure relations between Islam and the Western world. With the
advance of knowledge and a greater contact between Europe and the Muslim
 world, intellectual, social, cultural and political and economic, we
hope the old attitudes will change, giving place to better understanding
 and closer co-operation based on loyalty to facts, honest appreciation
of areas of agreement and disagreement between us, and respect for
differences. where we may disagree.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The International Islamic Conference held
 in London from 3rd to 12th April, 1976, has no parallel in the history
of Europe for never before have so many distinguished Muslim scholars
and statesmen been brought together in one place in Europe to explain
before the world the teachings of Islam as Muslims understand. them. A
major aim of the Conference was the development of a better
understanding of Islam and Muslim Culture in the West, with a view to
improving relations between Muslims and the followers of other faiths
and ideologies.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
One of the most memorable sessions was
the one devoted to themes relating to woman in Islam. It was addressed
by two Muslim women, both coming from the Western background, one
English and the other German. As such the Western audience had a chance
to listen to the Islamic viewpoint from those who, although coming from a
 different background, had accepted the Islamic social framework out of
conviction and were prepared to share their experience and its
intellectual appreciation with others. I am glad that these lectures are
 being published in the form of a separate book even before they appear
in the voluminous proceedings of the Conference. I am thankful to the
Islamic Foundation for producing this book so quickly and efficiently.<span id="more-16832"></span></h4>

<strong>Preface:</strong></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Ours is a period of tumult and change.
Doubt, dissatisfaction with the status quo, yearning for revolution seem
 to symbolize the spirit of the age. Age-old institutions face the
prospect of disintegration. Values that have inspired and led man In the
 past are being questioned, if not scorned. Everything seems to be in a
state of flux.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
There is nothing baSically wrong in a
mood of inquiry and re-examination. They have been mainsprings of
progress in the past and could be so in the future. The situation
changes if man loses balance and composure. If periods like these arouse
 man to evaluate and re-evaluate in the light of a higher criterion,
they can open up new horizons and prove harbingers of future progress.
But if they generate an overtly negative attitude, they lead to moral
and cultural vandalism. Change as such begins to be prized and sought
after. It is forgotten that change could be for the better or the worse.
 Even more important than change is the direction of change and our
sense of right and wrong, of truth and falsehood, of justice and
injustice and a commitment to prefer right, truth and justice on their
antithesis. There Is abundant evidence that we are amidst a period of
revolutionary change; there is little evidence that change is In the
direction of the right and truth and justice.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
In a period like this, it is very
Important that focus of attention should be shifted from change per se
to change for what. Minds should be riveted towards the ideals, values
and prinCiples which should go to make up man’s vision of the future.
The centre of concern should be made to move from minutive to the
fundamentals, from means to the ends, from techniques to the ideals and
ideologies. This is the challenge that besets modern man. This is the
issue that attracts most attention of one who tries to look upon the
predicament of man in modern society through the eye of a Muslim.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Islam is conscious of the material
aspects of human life. It is not a religion of the spirit alone. Its
uniqueness lies in treating the entire realm of human life as the real
domain of religion. The problems of material life and the technological
aspects of society are as much its concern as those of the purification
of the soul and the integration of man with his Creator. It is opposed
to every such concept of material or spiritual progress that tries to
treat the problem in isolation of the other aspect. It adopts an
integrative approach. It wants to avail of all the resources at the
disposal of man to create a new world where man lives in peace with his
Creator and with the entire creation, in short, in peace with himself.
And this is what is missing in modern society.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The Family is one of the key institutions
 of human society. When man is not at peace with himself this state of
affairs is reflected most in the realm of human relations, particularly
in the family and the relations between the sexes. Any discussion on the
 crucial problems of our age and on the future of humanity is bound to
cluster around relations between the sexes and the institutions of
family and education.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The International Islamic Conference held
 in April, 1976, in London under the auspices of the Islamic Council of
Europe and the King Abdul Aziz University focused on the theme of Islam
and the Challenge of our Age. A special session (Session V, 8th April,
1976) was devoted to an examination of the Islamic scheme for relations
between the sexes. Two European Muslim women spoke on the subject and
received a standing ovation from the audience. The entire proceedings of
 the International Islamic Conference are being edited for publication.
But in view of pressing demands from different quarters, these two
papers and parts of discussion thereon are being published separately in
 the present booklet Woman in Islam.</h4>

Sakr is looking after the Arabic version.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">

<h4 style="text-align: center;">

This is the ‘women’s lib’ age as the WEST prefers to term it. But is it
TRUE? Is it not a lip-service age turning women practically to ‘dolls’
or something like dolls in the real life?</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Women entering the fold of Islam played
an enviable prominent role, side by side their counterparts, men, in
shaping and developing the Muslim society as a model from the onset,
emancipating humanity, men and women, from the shackles of deep-footed
ignorance. Women in Islam have very special place, status and dignity
unknown to mankind before or after.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The life sketches of the early female
believers, in this book, stand as beacon and outstanding models for the
so-called ‘weaker sex’ and call for the revival of the pristine lofty
high position of women in the society once again.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
This work is an attempt at dispelling any
 misconception by bringing into focus biographies of the first
generation of Muslim women and the important role they played in the
overall development of their society, right from the beginning. It is
hoped that this book will not only strengthen the resolve of the already
 well-acquainted Muslims who follow the footsteps of their predecessors,
 it will also spur them into emulating the examples of those righteous,
noble and pure women.</h4>

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Many authors since the beginning the Islamic era have recorded and
written about the important role established by the Companions of the
Prophet, peace be upon him, during the early period of Islamic history.
Also, many great men like the Companions, caliphs, and scholars that
lived both during and after the Prophet’s life contributed to the
establishment and spread of Islam through the efforts of Da’wah. However
 the role that women contributed at the beginning of Islamic history has
 often been overlooked or neglected and as a result recorded data has
been disproportionately unavailable, even though Islamic history is full
 of stories and accounts of women and the significant role that they
played in Islam. This book attempts to fill a gap by enlightening the
reader a step further on the lives of these women as prodigies at the
time of the Prophet. Their legacy is that of courage, integrity, and
deep devotion to the message that the Blessed Prophet Muhammad brought
to mankind. Their influence was to have a profound impact not only on
their generation but subsequent generations.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
The noble women around the Prophet
Muhammad, peace be upon him, did not confine themselves to the corners
of their homes nor occupy themselves with trivial matters. They were
like shinning stars in the galaxy of wonders of Islamic history. They
possessed zeal and the will to sacrifice their lives and all that they
were used to, such as family ties and familiar territories, purely for
the sake of obeying Allah’s command. We can hardly find again such
pioneering women throughout Islamic history with such exemplary
attributes as these first female adherents who followed and associated
with Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Shouldn’t Muslim women feel proud of
Khadijah, who was the first person to embrace Islam? What about the
glory of Sumayah, who was the first martyr in Islam? What about Asma’,
young as she was frequently journeyed to the cave of Thawr while the
Messenger of Allah sought refuge there during his migration? Shouldn’t
Muslim women proudly remember Umm Imarah, who stood steadfast in the
Battle of Uhud when men fled in fear? What about the glory of ‘A’ishah,
who was among those who narrated the largest number of Prophetic
Hadiths? And at the Treaty of Hudaybiyah, it was the advice of a woman
which culminated in the peace among Muslim. What about the pride for
Muslim women in that?<span id="more-5328"></span></h4>

<strong>Muhammad ibn saalih al Uthaymeen<br />
Language: English | Format: PDF | Pages: 58 | Size: 1 MB</strong></h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
This book deals with fiqh issues specific to women regarding
menstruation, post partum (Nifaas), and abnormal bleeding
(Istihadah).Shaykh Uthaymeen brings proofs from the Quran and Sunnah.
Widely Referenced book for Women.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
All praise is due to Allah, we praise
Him, seek His help and forgiveness. We return to Him alone in
repentance, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and
from our wrong deeds. Whosoever Allah guides there is none who can
misguide, and whosoever Allah misguides there is none who can guide. I
bear witness that there is no god worthy of being worshipped except
Allah Who is free from any partners or associates. I bear witness that
Muhammad is the true slave and messenger of Allah (SW1), may the Salah2
of Allah be upon him.</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
It is common that there are three types of menses among women:</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
</h4>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
1) Menstrual Period,<br />
2)Istihadah: bleeding from the womb between women periods, and<br />
3) Nifass (post-delivery).<br />
The explanations of these matters in accordance with the evidences from
Qur’an and Sunnah is very important and beneficial, because:<br />
a) the Qur’an and Sunnah represent the only sources for all of the Decrees of Allah.<br />
b) in referring to these sources one achieves a state of peace, comfort
and relaxation as well as relief for having the requirements of worship
(in this case purification from menses) made known.<br />
c) any other reference lacks the quality of perfection of the proofs of the Qur’an and Sunnah.<span id="more-496"></span></h4>
